The Service

Serving Something
Bigger Than Yourself

Military service is one of the few experiences in life that genuinely tests what you're made of. Not in the controlled, comfortable way of an MBA case study or a leadership workshop — but in the raw, physical, and psychologically demanding way that strips away performance and reveals character.

Seven years with the NZDF Territorials, serving with the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, taught me more about leadership, discipline, and commitment than any other experience. The military doesn't ask whether you feel like showing up. It assumes you will.

Being named the 2022 NZDF Reservist of the Year was a recognition I'm deeply honoured by — not because of what it says about one moment, but because of what it represents across seven years of showing up, performing, and serving with everything I had.

"The military taught me that discipline isn't a constraint — it's the thing that sets you free to perform at your highest level."

01
Mission-First Leadership
The military instils a clarity about what matters: the mission. Personal comfort, ego, and politics are all secondary. That clarity — purpose over preference — is one of the most powerful leadership principles I carry into everything I do.
02
Discipline as Foundation
Military discipline is often misunderstood as rigid constraint. In reality, it's the foundation of freedom — the systems and standards that free you to think clearly and perform reliably, even under extreme conditions.
03
Trust in Teams
In a military unit, trust isn't a nice-to-have — it's a survival requirement. Learning to build it, maintain it, and earn it every single day shaped how I approach every team and organisation I've been part of since.
04
Composure Under Fire
Military training is designed to build stress inoculation — the ability to remain clear-headed and decisive when everything around you is demanding you panic. This composure transfers directly into medicine, business, and every high-stakes context.
05
Commitment & Follow-Through
Seven years as a reservist — balancing military obligations with medical school, events work, and everything else — is a lesson in sustained commitment. Starting things is easy. Seven years of showing up is not.
06
Service as Identity
The military culture of service — to the unit, to the nation, to something larger than the individual — became a core part of how I see my purpose. Medicine, community work, speaking to young people: the same orientation runs through all of it.
