The Sport

Competing at
the World Stage

Underwater hockey is fast, physical, and played entirely on the pool floor — a sport that demands complete trust in your teammates.

Selected for the NZ U18 Men's team in 2008 as the youngest in the squad, I captained the side the following year — winning the Trans-Tasman title both years. In 2010, our NZ U19 team took silver at the Age-group World Championships in the Netherlands.

"Pressure reveals, it doesn't define. You find out who you actually are when everything is on the line."

NZ Men's Team Captain
01
Leadership Under Pressure
Captaining the NZ U18 Men's team to a Trans-Tasman title — composure, decisions, morale — shaped the leader I became.
02
The Work Behind the Win
Silver isn't luck — it's thousands of hours of training and the choice to keep going when stopping would be easier.
03
Team Over Individual
You can't excel alone underwater. Complete trust in teammates became an instinct that carries into everything I do.
04
Competing Internationally
Seeing elite performance across cultures raises your own standard permanently.
05
Resilience & Recovery
Elite sport means losing often. Extract the lesson, reset, go again.
06
The Standard You Set
As captain, you are the standard. Leadership is lived, not declared.

Sport Shapes
Everything That Follows

The mental architecture sport builds — capacity for discomfort, relentlessness, composure under pressure — doesn't stay in the pool.

Medical school, military service, business, the stage: all of it bears the mark of what sport first built. Showing up consistently beats raw talent, and the person you become through the process matters more than any medal.

Sport taught me that if something's difficult, it's normally worth doing. I've been testing that hypothesis ever since.
